Ingredients
Scale
Apple Mixture
- 10 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 10 cups)
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Crisp Topping
- 2 cups quick oats
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups packed light brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1 cup (2 sticks / 227g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish using nonstick cooking spray or butter to prevent sticking.
- Prepare Apple Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with 1 cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Gently stir until all apple slices are evenly coated with the sugar and cinnamon mixture. Set this aside.
- Prepare Crisp Mixture: In a separate medium bowl, mix together 2 cups quick oats, 2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 cups brown sugar, and 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon. Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using your hands or a fork, work the butter into the mixture until the butter pieces are roughly pea-sized or smaller, creating a crumbly texture.
- Assemble Crisp: Spread about 3 cups of the crisp mixture evenly over the bottom of the prepared baking dish and press down firmly to form a crust. Pour the apple mixture evenly over this crisp base and gently press down with a spatula. Then sprinkle the remaining crisp topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake: Place the assembled crisp uncovered in the oven and bake for 35 to 45 minutes. The apple filling should be bubbling and the topping should turn a beautiful golden brown when done.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the apple crisp to cool slightly before serving. For best taste, serve warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.
Notes
- Use Granny Smith apples for a tart flavor that balances well with the sweet topping.
- Cold butter is essential to achieve a crumbly, crisp topping texture.
- You can substitute quick oats with rolled oats for a chewier topping if preferred.
- Make sure to press down the bottom layer firmly to create a sturdy base for the apple filling.
- Letting the crisp cool slightly helps the juices to thicken for better slicing and serving.
