Description

Delight in these aromatic Coffee Cinnamon Rolls, combining the classic soft, sweet dough with a rich coffee-infused cinnamon filling and a luscious coffee glaze. Perfect for breakfast or a cozy treat, they balance the warmth of cinnamon with the deep flavor of coffee in every bite.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup brewed strong coffee (cooled)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (softened)

Filling

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp instant espresso powder

Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp brewed coffee
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the yeast mixture: In a large bowl, combine warm milk, brewed coffee, granulated sugar, and active dry yeast. Let the mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is activated.
  2. Make the dough: Add the egg, softened unsalted butter, and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually add the all-purpose flour while mixing, forming a soft dough. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 6 to 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. First rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  4. Prepare the filling: While the dough is rising, mix together brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and instant espresso powder to create the flavorful filling blend.
  5. Shape the rolls: Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface into a 16 by 12-inch rectangle. Spread the softened butter evenly over the surface. Sprinkle the cinnamon-coffee sugar mixture evenly on top.
  6. Roll and slice: Starting from the long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Using a sharp knife, cut the roll into 12 even slices.
  7. Second rise: Place the cinnamon rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, cover, and let them rise again for 30 to 45 minutes until puffy.
  8. Bake the rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  9. Make the glaze: While the rolls bake, whisk together powdered sugar, brewed coffee, and vanilla extract until smooth to create the coffee glaze.
  10. Glaze and serve: Drizzle the glaze over the warm cinnamon rolls before serving for a sweet, coffee-infused finish.

Notes

  • Add chopped nuts such as pecans or walnuts or mini chocolate chips to the filling for additional texture and flavor.
  • Increase the amount of instant espresso powder in the filling or add some to the glaze for a stronger coffee taste.
