Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
- ¾ cup warm milk
- ¼ cup brewed strong coffee (cooled)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup unsalted butter (softened)
Filling
- ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
- ¾ cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp instant espresso powder
Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp brewed coffee
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the yeast mixture: In a large bowl, combine warm milk, brewed coffee, granulated sugar, and active dry yeast. Let the mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is activated.
- Make the dough: Add the egg, softened unsalted butter, and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually add the all-purpose flour while mixing, forming a soft dough. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 6 to 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Prepare the filling: While the dough is rising, mix together brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and instant espresso powder to create the flavorful filling blend.
- Shape the rolls: Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface into a 16 by 12-inch rectangle. Spread the softened butter evenly over the surface. Sprinkle the cinnamon-coffee sugar mixture evenly on top.
- Roll and slice: Starting from the long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Using a sharp knife, cut the roll into 12 even slices.
- Second rise: Place the cinnamon rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, cover, and let them rise again for 30 to 45 minutes until puffy.
- Bake the rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown on top.
- Make the glaze: While the rolls bake, whisk together powdered sugar, brewed coffee, and vanilla extract until smooth to create the coffee glaze.
- Glaze and serve: Drizzle the glaze over the warm cinnamon rolls before serving for a sweet, coffee-infused finish.
Notes
- Add chopped nuts such as pecans or walnuts or mini chocolate chips to the filling for additional texture and flavor.
- Increase the amount of instant espresso powder in the filling or add some to the glaze for a stronger coffee taste.
