Description

This Sour Cream and Onion Chicken recipe features tender, seared chicken breasts baked with a creamy and flavorful sour cream and dry onion soup mix sauce. It combines simple ingredients for a comforting, savory dinner that’s easy to prepare and perfect for weeknight meals.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Sauce

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 packet (about 1 oz) dry onion soup mix

Garnish

  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the chicken.
  2. Season Chicken: Lightly season the chicken breasts on both sides with salt and pepper according to your taste preference.
  3. Sear Chicken: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, sear the chicken breasts for 2-3 minutes on each side until they develop a golden brown crust.
  4. Prepare Sauce: In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup of sour cream with one packet of dry onion soup mix. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
  5. Assemble for Baking: Place the seared chicken breasts in a baking dish. Evenly spread the sour cream and onion mixture over the top of each chicken breast.
  6. Bake: Bake the chicken uncovered in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes. Bake until the chicken is thoroughly cooked and the sauce is bubbly.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Optionally garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving to add a pop of color and freshness.

Notes

  • Ensure the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) to ensure it is fully cooked and safe to eat.
  • You can substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream for a lighter sauce.
  • For added flavor, consider adding minced garlic to the sour cream mixture.
  • Serve with steamed vegetables, rice, or mashed potatoes for a complete meal.
  • The dry onion soup mix adds a significant amount of sodium; adjust salt accordingly.
